The Challenge

In August 2023, Eight Engines was tasked with creating a 20-minute taster for Victorian Justice, a period drama screenplay with ambitions to secure a major TV commission. The challenge? Deliver the look and feel of a premium TV drama while navigating significant budget constraints.

With limited funding, we had to adapt. There was no room for the large crews or elaborate resources typical of high-end productions. Instead, we had to work with our in-house equipment, be meticulous with location scouting, and ensure every second on set counted.

The Plan

To overcome these challenges, we devised a plan rooted in precision, creativity, and resourcefulness:

1. Maximising Resources: Leveraging Eight Engines’ own cutting-edge equipment, we eliminated rental costs while maintaining high production quality.
2. Smart Location Scouting: After extensive research, we secured Burnley Town Hall, a stunning Victorian-era venue that provided the perfect backdrop for the drama at minimal cost.
3. Efficient Scheduling: We meticulously planned every minute of the single-day shoot, ensuring no time or effort was wasted.
4. Streamlined Team: By assembling a smaller but highly skilled crew, we minimised costs while maintaining a seamless workflow.
5. Creative Problem-Solving: Careful attention was given to lighting, camera setups, and blocking to ensure each scene had the cinematic quality required to captivate commissioning editors.

The final taster for Victorian Justice was a testament to what can be achieved with resourceful planning and creative execution:
